In addition to paying homage to Melillo’s grandfathers, this series also commemorates the company’s new office on a 300-acre farm in the middle of the Connecticut River Valley growing region. Made at the famed AJ Fernandez factory in Nicaragua, the Especiales line consists of two variants (one for each grandfather): Pregnataro, a medium-bodied stick draped in a golden Connecticut shade wrapper leaf, and the cigar in question, Pasquale, a bolder, richer, fuller-bodied cigar boasting a nearly black Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The filler and binder blend is made up entirely of aged Nicaraguan tobacco. Both variants are available in one size, a 5 ” x 48 robusto size that offers a beautiful take on the flavor that Melillo and company worked so hard to achieve.

Packed in humble cedar chests of 12, each vitola wears a single band depicting the Charter Oak tree the brand was originally inspired by, representing Melillo’s home state of Connecticut. Meticulously crafted to offer a soft and abundant draw and an even burn, Pasquale starts off by sending billowing clouds of thick smoke to greet the palate. The first flavors include what one would expect from a dark Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro cigar: cocoa, espresso, and spicy black pepper. A soft dark chocolate note seems to be the core of the flavor profile, and the whole package is spiked with accents of sweet brown sugar throughout. The finish is long and heavy, yet all-in-all, the medium-full-bodied flavor profile is delicately balanced.

As Melillo said in a press release, “The Charter Oak core line would have been [his grandfathers’] everyday cigar, and these new blends (Charter Oak Especiales) would be for the weekend or a special occasion.” Well said, and we can’t help but agree. This pair of beauties is called “Especiales” for a reason, and we can wholeheartedly recommend either blend to be a great special occasion accompaniment.
